Summary of The Idea of Justice
Amartya Sen explores the ways in which, and the degree to which, justice is a matter of reason, and of different kinds of reason.
Social justice: an ideal, forever beyond our grasp; or one of many practical possibilities? More than a matter of intellectual discourse, the idea of justice plays a real role in how and how well people live. And in this book the distinguished scholar Amartya Sen offers a powerful critique of the theory of social justice that, in its grip on social and political thinking, has long left practical realities far behind.
About the Author Amartya Sen is Lamont University Professor at Harvard and an honorary fellow of LSE. He won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1998 and was Master of Trinity College, Cambridge 1998-2004. His books include Development as Freedom (OUP), The Argumentative Indian and Identity and Violence, and have been translated into more than thirty languages.
Indiaplaza Review
The 'The Idea of Justice' is another scholarly work by the Noble Laurate
Prof.Amartya Sen, the author of the best-selling ' Argumentative Indian ' and '
Identity and Violence '.
While 'Argumentative Indian' has been much read and appreciated, 'The Idea of
Justice', has been much talked and written about in the recent past. Both books
are comparable in their rather lucid and erudite rendering of a complicated
issue.
Prof.Sen is know to be a man who brilliantly marshals the arguments that justify
his conclusion, with extensive research and empirical evidence. This is
extremely evident in both the books.
In 'The Idea of Justice', Prof.Sen explains that justice is comparative rather
than absolute and there is no such thing as perfect justice. People's perception
of justice is colored by our customs and values. Yet, with critical reasoning we
can move towards an agreement on certain injustices. In the book, as much as in
his lectures, Prof. Sen emphasizes the need for dialogue for reaching an
understanding on and reducing injustice.
In the second half of the book, Sen asks what is it that the pursuit of justice
should actually advance? Can we agree on a measure by which to judge when a
society, in its quest for justice, is getting closer or drawing further away
from it?
Like in 'Argumentative Indian', where Sen tries to dismantle the accepted
western notion of India and the Indian, here too, he goes against the much
accepted thoughts on justice and injustice and makes a strong point for
individual action rather than an institutional blueprint.
Not only are both the books deftly written, but are also thought provoking and
profound. A certain have on your book shelves.
